I think the medical basis of the report is that a chronic inflammation injury is one that occurs over time, you don't just wake up with it nor will it simply occur from an incident in a game.

So in theory it could have been predicted that at some stage rest would be needed, or that he would need to be carefully nursed through games to use the terminology of a reporter.

An injury going back since before the summer (World Cup) perhaps even.

But perhaps he is rested from certain games, trains at a different level to others between matches. A French Paul McGrath if you will.

Either way the criticism that is being levelled at Wenger in this instance is that, given his condition and our knowledge of it, there was no way the player was going to go through Aug – Dec without recourse to missing games and that Wenger negligently left us short in defence on this basis.
