He looks like he's just been interfered with.

He's clearly let himself go. Perhaps he has a broken heart?

Mind you, while I like many of his recipes, I can't help but feel he'd be unsettling company. He strikes me as the sort of chap who'd stand too close to you and say things like 'No more for me, thank you' after one glass.

I spoke to him, briefly, once and the entire conversation was undermined by my "WOT?"- "SORRY?"-"AHs" because I couldn't hear a f**king thing the he was saying.

He's still wonderful though.

Watching him nibble enthusiastically on a Malted Milk while going all Proustian made me feel a bit itchy, tbh.

I must admit I have asked myself whether how uncomfortable his TV persona makes me is related to the fact that he's gay, but I can't be sure.

there called 'Bushy Fandango'.

I find it very hard not to make inappropriate remarks where Bushy Fandango is concerned. :-

Feelings you thought were dead and buried.

Feelings you attribute to a 'different' Berni.

It's not for me, on balance. Good luck to everyone who likes it, though.

No, I actually think my problem with Nigel is that he has any sexuality at all. It doesn't seem quite right, somehow.

I always expect to read that he's topped himself. I hope I'm mistaken.

He lives 10 minutes from Hampstead Heath, for Christ's sake. There's always a new and exciting friend to be made.

A dramatisation of Nigel Slater’s award-winning memoirs, Toast told the story of the food writer’s unhappy childhood. Starved of affection after his mother’s death from asthma when he was nine, Nigel could not relate to his father, Alan, an emotionally cold, occasionally violent, man.

The situation was made drastically worse by the arrival of ‘Miss Potter’ – a coarse but beguiling cleaner on the make, who bewitched Slater Snr with her saucy outfits and seductive home cooking.

He only escapes this misery after his father, played by Stott, dies from a heart attack when he is 16 – a heart attack brought on by his wife’s deliberate overfeeding, or so it is suggested in the drama and the book on which it is based. It is a sorry tale and one which Slater, 54, only felt able to write because the two protagonists are dead. Even then he felt the need to use pseudonyms, saying how hard it was to cast such an unrelenting light on the darkest corners of his life.
