When Wenger awards him another year on his contract, Awimb will explode.

have had a pretty decent non/lower league career. A sort of reverse Alberto Mendez.

and Diaby bantered them off with....****housery for pretty much the entire 90 minutes.

Yes, I said 90 minutes.

I think he could've been as good as Pogba. Or Toure Yaya even.

of persistent niggles?

I mean, the only time I can think of players retiring prematurely is when they've been warned that by playing on they risked causing long term damage that could impair them as they get older.

What doctor would have the heart to tell a 27 year old to retire because of a series of relatively minor setbacks? :-(

Certainly the pause - which I assume was to give an impression of spontaneity - hinted at a certain degree of knowingness to the whole thing.

He might even have got into the Champions League through the back door, like a kid who fails his A-levels, becomes a plumber, or, whatever, and makes his millions far quicker than his academically superior classmates.

So any decision or advice to retire would not be on the basis of constant niggles as you put it but due to an inability to ever fully recover from that incident in 2006 or 2007.

I would imagine many players had serious injuries and having ‘recovered’ from the original injury simply never fully recovered full fitness and ultimately had to retire. Richie Powling perhaps. Wayne Harrison another. Probably a lot of others more current or relevant.

Walk into any pub on matchday and there would be many, many identikits of this chap along with many other identikits of the chap from outside the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Then this is repeated at every football club in the country.

You wouldn’t want to talk to the bloke mind you.

But then the poor fellow has clearly never known the touch of woman and I doubt ever will, so I suppose it's churlish to begrudge him even such reflected glory as this.

I was unaware he had even retired.

Injured 2006, tried for another 3 years but gave up. We have allowed Diaby to keep trying for longer but now may be time to end it all.

Wouldn't be at all shocked to see a new contract for the lad.

social misfits to interview? I mean, you could throw a stone in the Arsenal crowd and confidently expect to hit more normal people than these, so how does he do it?

The answer's 'sit on the same coach to away games as them', isn't it? :-(

Look at poor old Mr Bull****, for instance. Clearly pride is a distant memory to the man.

on the way to the station that is vaguely intelligent or rational. It has literally never, ever happened.

When I say that football fans are the dregs of humanity then I am not being melodramatic or exaggerating for effect.

I'm not sure we've mentioned Wealdstone Raider here but he must be the least threatening hooligan since your wee indian fella joined the away scheme.

You could turn it into a memoir. 'A Portrait of the Autist as a Young Man - How I stopped attending away matches and avoided the sex offenders' register', perhaps? You can have that one for free.

It is a worry, though, surely? That, but for a few twists of fate and genetics, you could easily have become one of them?

I've always assumed the world of black or white certainties these people inhabit must also be a world without existential angst or ennui.

On the other hand, I find it chilling to think that I could easily have become a man who reacts like this to their football team not being run exactly how they want.

In any case, you do behave like this, even if only by association, so one may as well let it all hang out, imo.

football is just his way of sublimating it. I mean, this is the face of a man in the grip of Weltschmertz imo.

every single fan of the scoring team is secretly celebrating a little more vigorously than they think is altogether necessary or appropriate.

If we could all just have an adult conversation about this then we could stop the ridiculous charade, calm down a bit and enjoy football like mature, rational grown ups.

Frankly, when my missus believes the Emirates to be a safer option for her twelve year-old son than Glyndebourne, I think you lot really need to take a long, hard look at yourselves.
