Or perhaps He was being polite.

to Arsene - namely that he shipped him out because he wasn't good enough.

fact that Merson doesn't carry little gold embossed editions of Rimbaud in his back pocket and cannot quote Milton and doesn't speak 6-7 languages like suave Arsene, but to completely paint him as some average nomark is really lazy revisionism. Just saying :-)

had then. However, he was simply not good enough for the team Wenger was building.

the fat ogre expect us to believe that Wenger begged him to stay but the lure of living and playing in Middlesborough was just too much to keep him living in London and playing for Arsenal.

Paul Merson :hehe:

Villa after which he did a triumphant knee slide in the rain....And then we beat them 3-2 in injury time - take that Schmeichel!

would question the wisdom of keeping people informed through the medium of a bloke who doesn't know any of the players taking part.

His Dortmund analysis was particularly good, "the lad has passed it down the line, the lad has crossed it in for the lad to put it in".

The ex Norwich striker "Cinnamon Jackson" was good as well :hehe:

Quite enticing for a player with the problems you have pointed out.

Note: You probably don't even know who he is/was in respect of his time with Arsenal.

I seem to recall Wiltord being very good as well, those were the days when the other team going ahead was merely a wake up call, like the Boro 5-3 game.

career with us very clearly.

In the early part of his career he had potential, but was inconsistent and clearly had what I'll be nice and call 'fitness issues'. He was by no means one of our stand-out players in GG's best teams.

Later on, Merson benefitted by virtue of being one of only two 'flair' players in very workmanlike teams. This caused him to be a fan favourite, but he was still inconsistent and some distance off being the sort of player Wenger was going to want in his side long term.

we'd kill for him now, just in those days when Wenger spent 12m on someone expectations soared.

I remember a hat-trick in 20 minutes or so against West Ham which was rather good. Bergkamp-inspired of course

He was a good player, quite often a good player in a very average team. His problems saw many people associate with him as being normal in a time when footballers were becoming increasingly un-normal. He clearly enjoyed a laugh, again another thing that endeared him to many. He did 'that celebration' at Wembley.

I remember being absolutely gutted when he was exited though in hindsight it was crystal clear his time was up.

You will note that most people who have commented here are chaps of a certain age, I say that with all due respect to Ben whose age I am unaware of but he knows what he is talking about.Chaps who will remember Merson the player and for whatever a retard he has shown himself to be since stil offer him a modicum of respect as a player.

Rich I'm afraid is a f**king idiot. Quite often his comments are borne from what he feels he should be saying in order to be part of what he may perceived to be the kool crew.

Club were it not for his tendency to be enormously disrespectful to the club on a regular - almost obsessive - basis.

As it is, I'm afraid his behaviour in the last few years has soured my view of his time with us almost completely.

I used to enjoy his free kicks more than anything else, really.

So you can take your opinions and shove them up your arse.

I'm aware he voiced his opinion post-Anderlecht which has caused the open disagreement with Wenger, just unaware of other specifics.

Any other time I have seen him he appears to be simple banter bloke, his main crime perhaps being one of intelligence or articulation.
