If they get the ball back they have a chance to win, if they don't the other team have almost certainly won and will run down the last two minutes on the clock. With an onside kick it has to travel 10 yards for them (kicking team) to be able to challenge for it, if not the other team can go for it uncontested. So i imagine the rarity of such a technique being used in american football combined with the situation of the game and pressure in the kick is why they went nuts.
