special power like the Pope has, is it? I mean, the Pope can make saints, send you to Hell, talk to God and explain exactly what it is He actually thinks about stuff, decide whether babies go to heaven - all that stuff. What does the Daley Lame do, exactly?

HHDL merely imbues us with a sense of inner peace and allows us to reject the pursuit of fleeting corporeal pleasures.

Without his influence, I for one would be runnig around like a blue-arsed fly seeking gratification in worldly goods.

I'd look quite a mug, wouldn't I? HHDL keeps me on the road to Nirvana.

ruling over the heads of kings and governments who would quiver in servility to his empire. Through a network of professional torturers and mind-controllers (called nuns) he would manipulate the minds of his subjects to inspire fanatical loyalty to his cult, even from the ones that didn't actually believe in god.

I had that Henry VIII in the back of the cab once.

This one. Can you imagine what they get up to? Can you imagine them locked in the throes of Sapphic passion as poor little Jack submits to the fleshly desires of this woman mountain? :-(

You can, can't you?

Funnily enough I was wondering about rural Cumbria during the war. No bombing, plenty of food available off the ration... they must have had it well cushy.

Cheap ones.

Yes, I reckon it would have been a good place. Think they put a load of munitions factories up there, though.

A farming community would, I am sure, have quickly set up a gentle black market in bartered eggs and milk and so on - and imagine when a farmer killed a pig! I'm guessing the ministry didn't get 100% of the carcass, tbh.

Different in Carlisle, I'd imagine.

It did strike me that the fat pig might want to try eating it occasionally, then.

Now, back to the vegetables...

Musically they did nothing for me and I even suffered the pain of seeing the live. Bizarrely given their reputation in the pantheon of rock music I find the only thing I ever really liked by them was the so-called if you will Unplugged album.

an undeniable element in the essential fantasy that is rock and roll. Elvis Presley's career wasn't damaged by his look, I don't believe.

I like the Unplugged album best, also. I like the way he says, 'This is a song by The Vaselines', in a voice which clearly demonstrates that he is off his tits on smack.

The hotel and restaurant staff were all French or Scottish. Do they talk like Yorkshires or Geordies or something?

Scaryport. I was actually a little worried for Sir C that he might stumble out onto the A595 and find himself in Workington or Whitehaven.

You namby-pamby suvverners what can't even take a bit of Coventry definitely need to give West Cumbria a swerve.

Berni

You didn't experience the real Cumbria. You haven't seen them in their true environment until you've been dragged out by your father-in-law(ish) to watch Speedway in Workington.

Workington. Now that, my friend, is a ****hole. It's so bad, Ash probably likes it.

Even the nice bits - like St Bee's - are slightly spoiled by proximity to Sellafield.

there today.

There's something about standing on a mountain and watching a jet fighter thingy tearing through the valley beneath you that adds a certain excitement to a day. Slightly less fun when perched on a ledge or narrow ridge in high winds and one of the feckers blasts unexpectedly round the corner at you though.

one day. When we eventually got back to the inn we ended up having a few drinks with a couple of blokes from West Cumbria who were working in a local quarry. This was their night off which involved getting as pissed as possible. We managed to extract ourselves from the situation in time, and hence got away with our lives twice that day.
