View Full Version : Just had a rather unsatisfactory chat with the boss about

Monty91
10-10-2014, 02:23 PM
working from home one day a week when my girlfriend goes back to work in January in order to save a day's childcare. Obviously I would make up the hours in the evenings and weekends (entirely feasible) as I won't be able to get any work done with a 9 month old crawling around.

He's said he doesn't want to set a precedent as staff are already pestering him to do the same (because they live far away, rather than because they have kids).

Is he being unreasonable?

Berni

Also, this working from home would involve you caring for the child full-time, wouldn't it? Which is not working, is it?

f**k off imo.

...point is that the work gets done, and working from home means doing that, not tossing it off all the time. Where you went wrong is offering to make up the hours, basically saying that you'll be doing f**k all in the way of work, so I can understand why your boss wasn't too happy. He does need to be a bit more forward thinking about the practice as a whole though, to be honest.

Regulations relating to shared parental leave and pay will come into effect on this date and apply to parents of babies due (or children placed for adoption) on or after 5 April 2015 .

Maternity/paternity - employed mothers and fathers/partners who meet the qualifying criteria will be able to end the mother's maternity leave and pay and share the balance as flexible parental leave and pay. Mothers will still have two weeks' compulsory maternity leave (four weeks for manual workers), but they can then share the remaining 50 weeks' maternity leave and 37 weeks' pay.

From the way you're describing it, it seems like you've asked him to do you a favour, basically.

Think more about how this could benefit him, rather than how it is of benefit to you.

I don' t mean to be dickish, I am sincerely trying to help.
He probably has enough to worry about, so the only way he's going to agree is if it makes sense to him. And if he is going to have more people asking the same, you should appreciate that allowing you to work from home would put him in a difficult position.

Saying yes to you and no to others could possibly cause a lot of unnecessary drama in the workplace.

Thursdays and Fridays...nothing to do with the racing of course ;-)

The first thing you need to do is stop calling it Working from Home.

The instant perception is - Here we go...this guy wants to fkin piss off on a Friday.

Going forward refer to it as...Working Remotely.

Works like a charm.

Next you need to put together a proposal (to submit to your boss) about why working remotely will bring added benefit, improvement, value and Cost Savings to the Company.

And don't just put random reasons....back it up with figures and how much extra money either in revenue or cost savings you will bring in by doing this.

You can include the benefits you yourself will derive from this project if you want but I like to put the gun to their head i.e. hey this how much money you'd make by doing this how can you say no???

Good luck with this...hope it works for you. I did all of the above and they didn't just give 1 day a week home...they gave me two and in fact I can take as many as I require...a few months back I worked from home for two weeks straight but that's only because the perception is there that I'm actually doing serious works and that I've delivered on everything I've said and got big results.
