a family have moved in upstairs. they have 2 kids who appear to like running from one end to the flat to the other 24 hours a day making a right noise.

I would like to make them aware of this but I'm a pussy.

What's the approach to take here? they are probably unaware of the noise and it's hard to control kids but it's doing my f**king head in.

thought it was too good to be true.

A question of scale of course. Yours would require at least a one meter diameter

They'll soon complain at which point you can tell them that you play it to drown out the sound of the kids running about.

It was so nice and peaceful until this past few days.

I will fight running kids with strategically placed guitar amp.

And having a few late night drunken parties may force the family to move out..

token, serves you right for living in London

We had people upstairs who seemed to wear shoes while walking on floorboards, had a word with them and they stopped

We have all wooden floors in our flat so I assume it's the same for upstairs. I don't think our landlord owns the upstairs though which would have been handy. It's on a private close it's really not the typical London place it's really quiet.

I will have a chat if I see them outside I don't want to look like a maniac. And I don't want my wife to handle this with her Italian ways.

The place has been empty since we got there. They moved in last Monday at first I only saw one guy going in with furniture and stuff so I put up with extra noise a bit as I assumed it was just moving in noise.

but then it was just like running back and forth. then I saw them going out and they had the 2 kids explained everything.

I don't want to look like the typical standing on the front lawn cockney chap screaming at his neighbours.

if you want to address it, i'd make a joke out of it next time you see them by asking her about ow old her kids are etc and then drop a subtle hint that you can hear them when they play. Then it won't be embarrassing for either of you

They've got bundles of nervous energy at that stage, you can either spend your time shouting at them and make evryones life hell, and crucially more noisy, or you can try and keep them entertained and engrossed in something.

on this one.
I can only tell you from experience that corrective behaviour shouldn't really require a great deal of shouting to get your point across.
It all starts at a much earlier age than 7 tho' :-)

...including random gymnastic moves.

She'll grow out of it soon enough, most reasonably bright seven year olds are the same.

It's the kids you see who run about screaming their heads off, while the parents sit back without an ounce of empathy for those around.
Kids need to be kids, god knows I despair at these parents who seem to spend an inordinate effort to cut short the best years of their lives with every passing generation but it's all a question of balance and trying to show them respect and awareness of others in certain situations.
