of his speech concerning welfare, immigration and the deficit.

He spoke without notes for 65 minutes, and 'forgot' welfare, immigration and the deficit?

:hehe:

Also, I'm less pro-Milibot than anyone else here, I assure you.

doing The Trip. Same restaurants and hotels, see? 'Cos we like a drop of grub and countryside.

Obviously evenings will be set aside for gastronomy and days will be free for looking at scenery and walking and so on. Any tips on must-see vistas or historical sites or houses or whatever would be much appreciated.

My issue, though, is choosing which vehicle to take.

On the one hand, a touring holiday with some spectacular driver's roads would point one in this direction:

However, the ability to see over hedgerows and fully take in the scenery whilst driving would point one in this direction:

What would you do? I can't decide :-(

It involves cars.

Hang on, that was just a thinly veiled 'I drive an Aston Martin' post, wasn't it?

I know your game.

Feel free to continue to direct your ire at Ashberto to avoid any duplication. Although you might as well ask berni about cars as ask the notoriously pedestrian bassist.

Mostly as there will be corners but more importantly as there will be people seeing you driving it.

passes than take the racing car. Much more fun.

I'll suggest places to go in a bit. Do sir and madam like walking over mountains?

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

My choice of 4x4 is somewhat informed by the massive discount I get on Jeep through work.

Sir and madam love to walk, but Sir is less keen on hours walking up steep bits. Aren't there places we can drive to the top and walk along, rather than up?

Use Hardnott pass to drive via Eskdale to Wasdale & Waswater - the most beautiful of all the lakes and visit (even better stay in) Wasdale Head Inn at the top of the valley. There's also Hardnott Roman fort to visit on the way, and you'll go over Wrynose Pass as well on the same road.

Another fab lake/valley is Buttermere, which can be enjoyed on a drive from Keswick via the Derwent Valley and Borrowdale, over Honnister Pass (you can visit a slate mine here) into Buttermere then back to Keswick via Newlands Valley (and another nice pass).

Another use of Honnister Pass is to cheat your way up to Great Gable (one of the largest and moust famous, and stunning, of the mountains) by basically driving half-way up and parking then walking to it via a couple of other fells. I can get back to you with more details on this.

Best waterfall to visit is Aira Force by Ullswater but that time of year there should be plenty of wetness and there'll be little falls threading their glistening way down the mountains everywhere. If you go to Ullswater via Kirkstone pass, use the old road as it's more fun. The new one is too easy.

There might still be a museum of Bond cars near Keswick, if that's your thing. Avoid Windermere - it's too touristy and not mountainous enough. Conniston is worth a visit though for the Donald Campbell museum if heroic and tragic acts of derring-do are your thing, which I believe they are.

I can recommend some specific non-challenging walks. Eskdale valley doesn't have a lake in it which leaves more space for walking. You can get there on a miniature steam railway from Ravenglass and do a river walk which is all very romantic.
