Alongside the **** it's dropped the Labour Party and getting rid of Salmond, this referendum is starting to become a gift that just keeps giving imo. :hehe:

I do put a lot of this down to the truly awful idea of allowing children to vote about anything, tbh. They don't have the maturity to deal with the fact that they lost.

The referendum has been an excellent argument for raising the voting age to 25 imo.

is a pretty fair indication you're in the wrong, does it?

I didn't say 25, b did. I said lowering from 18 to 16 to vote is crazy & I stand by that.

He'd lived about 30 normal lifetimes before 1939. To belittle his achievements by referring to him as potentially a 'relative footnote' is coming it pretty high. Get back to me when you've led a cavalry charge, been captured by and escaped from the enemy, been a war correspondent, written bestselling books, been elected as an MP, risen to the cabinet, and been in charge of the most powerful navy the world has ever seen.

Relative footnote my arse.

In fact, his most significant actions prior to 1939 and all that don't particularly redound to his credit. His rather shoddy actions during the Home Rule Crisis of 1914 s and dreaming up the Gallipoli debacle would have been the things he was remembered for.

He'd have made an interesting entry in the dictionary of national biography, but historically, he'd still have been a footnote.

If it hadn't been for the War of Independence, so would George Washington. If it hadn't been for penicillin, so would Alexander Fleming. You get the idea.

You can make all the disparaging remarks you like about Winston but you'll have to come through me.

virtues in the peculiar circumstances of the Second World War. His dogmatism, unwillingness to compromise, his intemperate nature, his populism, his rhetoric and above all his quasi-mystical belief in English exceptionalism - all of which had made him widely disliked and lacking in political circles to the point of near ridicule - happened to be the right thing at the time. Which was lucky for all concerned.

He was cataclysmically wrong about an awful lot of things, though, and usually at odds with the tide of history. Also, nobody should ever have let the man anywhere near military strategy. Utterly clueless.
