Did you know that the whole of the south coast of the US was basically defioned by Pirates and the attempts to ward them off?

Every aimless Eurocountry, especially the Spanish, spent great sums to defend Florida. Lots of coastline! So enterprising "privateers", like Jean Lafitte, sailed around until they found what is now New Orleans.
Same distance from the easily taken Spanish lugs, laden down with gold, 90% less hassle.

New Orleans has been a raucous kind of town ever since.
