this Scotland has, and will get even more, self-government for internal matters. Together with the res of the UK it is a much more efficient and effective economic, political, administrative and cultural unit and thus better equipped to meet the challenges o the 21st century.

Plus without Andy Murray the British Davis Cup team is useless.

If I was a Scottish national I'd have a hard time getting past previous injustices against my country. Sorta like how blacks feel in this country. I'm neither but there seem to be many parallels.

because the English bailed them out of their debts. Scots then became enthusiastic and effective empire builders and administrators of the British (note the word) Empire. So what are these injustices of which you speak exactly?

Or are you just doing the usual American thing of assuming that the English must always be evil oppressors regardless of historical facts?

I think we've come off rather worse from the exchange. :-(

loyal Protestant lowlanders. They were more civil wars than anything else. Certainly the Highlands were cleared and pacified, but most of the pacifying was done by Scotsmen against Scotsmen. During the periods you mention, in fact, Scots rose to huge prominence in literature, science, philosophy, politics and economics. They were in no sense second class citizens.

the Monarchy. I would say it was more of case of class than nationality.

A better example of recent times was probably trialling the poll tax there but the rest of the country was stuck with that eventually as well and it basically killed the conservatives as a party in Scotland.

They seem to do all right for themselves particularly since devolution. And they can't hate England too much given how many of the f**kers end up down there

they went. The myth that it was all one way is one that Scottish nationalist types like to perpetuate, but that still doesn't make it true.

no real question of anyone taking offense or of there being any lasting feeling of bitterness and resentment.

I've always been under the impression that bitterness and resentment are the only things keeping their lard-clogged arteries open tbh.

think would happen if one of the states were to request a referendum to leave the union and become independent?
