View Full Version : Were people actually genuinely critical of Wellbeck’s decision to go for the chip on Saturday?

exact apart from the fact that time he scored.

I am sure I saw a comment in the paper on Sunday alluding to this.
Of course he may not have.
as conclusive proof that he isn't a "natural goalscorer", he hardly panicked did he.

and also that he was 50/50.
Now I am no mathematician, but I am pretty sure that if the latter is true, the former is somewhat misleading.

Swore I did, and a rude name.
but I'd happily take a draw now, 1-1?

Surely you can empathise now?

If he is okay he plays, he is in contention for a place in the starting 11 so he had a good chance to play.
A player like Diaby or Monreal or Giroud does not.
It is not his first language of course, you have to allow for these things.

That however is a good one, he deserves credit for that.

was so narrowly close to being a goal and also involved a well-executed piece of improvisation on his debut (a time of nerves for any player).
I also don’t understand why missing the target makes him more culpable than if, say, he had hit the target with a weak shot that was easily saved.
Other than that, good post

I suppose it depends who you are. Danny needed a goal more than he needed a nice finish. If you follow.
However, if he thought that was the best, most efficient way to do it then fair enough.

He chipped the ball ffs.

Also, I consider the fact he had the clarity of his mind to improvise in such a way on his debut highly encouraging.

But it is not necessarily an easy thing to execute when through on goal.

executed it wrongly by a matter of a couple of inches. Certainly not enough to be in any way critical. On the contrary, I was encouraged by the incident, on balance.

His improvisation led to him missing the target altogether.

Reminded me of van Persie's unneccesarily improvised finish v Meelan.
I think Welbeck will do alright though.

if you looked at stats that those chips have a higher conversion rate than other types of finish.
The fact hat Hart was nowhere near it indicates that the decision was a good one. He was just fractionally out with his aim.
I also think most players on their debut would not have the calmness or confidence to try such a thing. I consider that a positive.

Game.
I am happy with a striker trying this and missing. Would be far more worried if he had simply walloped it in the general direction of the goal.

On target, but it did not hit the target.
Note: Possibly the most stupid football related argument I can recall on here.

Not his missing....just him and his style of play....he had less than a second to take his shot...he acted on pure instinct.
Who would have thought that Richard Dunne and a fourty year old Rio would struggle covering for the wing backs?
