Just a more eloquent than usual pub rock band

but beyond that only ignorance can explain a lack of appreciation.

In other words, there's loads of stuff that I don't like but I can recognise its quality for those that might like it.

In other, other words. 'Meh' is a really really **** critique. :-)

Album as a body of work. It works as a whole.

Still a long way from calling myself any kind of fan and i still think weller is an absolute c**t*

In other words, something you dont like and cannot in any way appreciate?

Social commentary at it's zenith.
A love song like English Rose from a "punk" band?
The 15 minutes of fame in To Be Someone?
Greatest album by a British band since Village Green.FACT.
Oh! and the fella was 19 or 20.

Foxton was a magnificent bassplayer.

I recognise the quality of the lyrics, of course. They do feel a little bit trite and 'sixth form poet' though but the music is your standard post punk white-boy rock. If anything it could do with a little more minor key and distortion action.

It's a little tight to be properly angry and I cant get over that, too polished for me.

Though latterly I've come to appreciate Eton Rifles, not least for the idea that David Cameron likes it. I can imagine him putting it on and sagely nodding his head along, chillaxing.

I do think that a fair few songs from The Smiths knock it into a cocked hat though, Handsome Devil for starters.

Especially considering that, as Curly says, the blerk was practically a teenager.

And have you actually checked all the keys used on the album, or is your ear so refined that you can speak with certainty on it anyway? You realise I'm likely to go and do the former now.

And Mr Clean - not angry? :hehe:

I still think The Smiths were ten times the band The Conserve were, they're still namechecked as an influence to this day. Weller's lot are pretty much forgotten by anybody under the late 30s and I think that's telling.

And my point is that the Jam genuinely didnt seem too angry about stuff, they lacked edge and swagger for me. It was all too clean, too suburban, too southern, too predictable.

Also, indelibly smeared in **** by the Style Council.

What sort of do are you rocking nowadays, P? I presume you've moved on from the swampy look in your profile pic.

I was described last week as 'ron swanson without a moustache', which wasnt entirely the look I had hoped for.

But I could add about 90% of the identikit commercial **** that I hear.

Ashberto

Chalk and cheese, musicistically.

Anyway, it's all old mans talk to whatever the whippersnappers are into. Can you imagine anything today even being good enough for people to be debating its relative merits over thirty years later?
