He was good of course, a simple fact borne from his employment with us and then with Barcelona, and had the potential to develop and grow as a player but his head was turned by Barcelona and he was possibly ill advised in pushing for the move, something of course which no person can really blame him for as the reality is that no player can turn down a move to a club like Barcelona or Real Madrid, arguably the two biggest clubs in world football, a chance that may never arise again etc.

Times were different then, we were losing top level players left, right and centre so another reason to understand his logic.

He had his moments of excellence, that pass to van Persie v Everton as an example. He also had his moments of expletive roaring and hair pulling out frustration, perhaps a symptom of youth but also a sign that he had a lot to learn.

He was “top class” in the eyes of some because he played for us. Had the exact same player been employed by one of our rivals then the same people who lauded him as top class would have fallen over themselves to find areas of his game to criticise. I always think a more objective analysis of players is the way forward.

The apparent ease or willingness of Wenger to accept the deal perhaps speaks volumes all the same.
