They believe (and rightly so, I think), that Islam as they know it is threatened by modernity. (I use modernity here not as Nike-sneakers or iPads, but powerful forces like the industrialisation, the communication revolution, the ideas of democracy and human rights and scientific method).

The ideas of democracy, universal human rights and women's rights does not fit well with the Wahhabist, or other Islamist interpretations of the Quran.

At the same time traditional values are believed to be undermined by modern society.

Many of the states in the Middle East developed from nomadic tribes into rich states just in a few decades. The religious and cultural battle is fought right now.

The West is seen as the source of indutrialism, the communication revolution, the ideas of human rights and democracy and scientific method. Add politics (oil politics, Israel) to the mix and this is why some are blaming the West.

I believe it is just as much a schism within Islam as a fight against the west. Sunnis fight Shias, Iran fights Al-Qaida and the Arab spring highlighted deep political divisions within Arab countries.

Islam is trying to define its place in the world and its relation to modernity. It is like a very angry teenager growing up. It is going to be messy and unfortunately it could take time.
