I keep nearly jumping out of my skin, as if suffering shell-shock, when one starts up nearby with its ear-splitting shriek.
It’s literally just like The Somme.

I think they've applied some sort of doppler effect busting science to it. I was watching a program on telly which said they've actually got quieter overall but their sound is concentrated into a finer point which makes it sound louder.

I think this is supposed to be frequency based again but I believe it's just bloody louder

quite funny and informative about the whole hearing going as you get older thing and deafness in general

...and women lose the ability to hear lower-pitched sounds (e.g. men's voices).
Nature is either doing something very clever or it has a malicious sense of humour.
