Eyewitness Paul Bell said, "It was literally looping round the aeroplane."

No, Paul, it wasn't.

Don't worry though, there's a Chipmunk at the back of the hangar at Coningsby, so we're hardly short of reserves.

with the whole bomb-thing and "Thomas charging through midfield".

Can someone piece together an actual joke, or is this observation sufficient on its own?

contract so was cheaper to just build it and potentially mothball it/use it as a spare/for spare parts.

deck. On the other hand, if there is a small explosive charge that goes off and damages the aircraft without destroying it, it may be helpful to have someone on hand to have a look. Or maybe the skipper was bored with his FO and requested some company.

What the military needs are a few more cuts, tbh.

you? Do you not feel a bit odd about that?

At the end of the day, the armed forces are basically civil servants.

available money on important matters, the most important of which must be security.

Spending money on layabouts and ridiculous railway lines isn't going to help us when the red horde washes across the Polish border, is it?

What we should do is just make friends with the Russians, sit back and relax.

Mark my words, Putin can smell the weakness of the west and he's going to f**k us firmly in the arsepart.

When you've been assaulted by major powers as often as them it's not surprising that they'd want a nice fat buffer zone.

Anyway, NATO is the one on the march towards Moscow, not Russia towards Paris. Taking Crimea was just strategic, and necessary for their security. If you're going to have a nice, stable cold war (and some people want another one) you need a balance of power.

smoked salmon, but in fairness, have never enjoyed both together.

Although much as I love both scrambly eggs and smoked salmon, the two don't really work together for me for some reason. I find that smoked salmon is best delivered on a blini with some sour cream and cucumber.

btw, while we are in harmonious accord may I ask if there is any chance of changing your username to something a little less ... revolting?

Perhaps not but, we have agreed on a few points over the last decade or so, shirley?

I can reveal that I have currently been toying with the idea of changing my username. Watch this space ( )
