that you don't need to offer. The whole 'the pitch looks a bit lively' thing is always a 50/50 ball, since it depends on so many factors to be successful. In other words, it is a gamble based on hunches and guesswork. It is simply not the percentage move in 99 cases out of 100.

Our batting is fragile and prone to collapse, thus a scenario where we have to bat last under pressure is less than desirable.

The strategy of putting them in relied for its efficacy on us getting a first innings lead of such significance that we either didn't have to bat again or could get such a lead that we only had to get a nugatory sum in the last innings. Given how weak our bowling attack is and how evenly-matched these sides are generally, that was never likely to happen.
