The arrest happened last week. His parishioners were initially told nothing and were surprised when he failed to turn up for Mass on Sunday.
The priest, from the parish of Carciano di Stresa on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy’s lake district, was the only person arrested by the police.
He was found guilty last September by a court in Verbania of trying to swindle the old woman of her savings.
