With all the wealthy owners coming into the game & our honourable but flawed stance of "keeping it in the family" & being self-sufficient was never going to work when it came to competing at the very top. For a good few years we were arguably a couple of 10 million buys away from having a strong enough squad. The margins were far, far smaller than you are now making out.

Despite the gloss it was obvious the budget was pretty tight and in some years we only broke even thanks to the transfer fee surplus we created.
