Andy Dunn on Arsenal: Wenger's heading for more post-World Cup transfer window woe

The Gunners' boss seems relaxed in Brazil, but the stark fact is United, Chelsea, City and Liverpool have spent a combined £169m already. Arsene? Nothing

Invariably, Arsene Wenger is mad busy during World Cup summers. He’s just not mad busy buying *footballers.

Wenger loves a major *tournament and, this time around, few club managers can have captured the spirit quite like Arsene.

Away from pundit duties, he was clearly having a ball during a beach knockabout in Ipanema with Bixente Lizarazu and *Christian Karembeu.

Wenger even tried to recreate Robin van Persie's salmon-leap header. Great stuff. His passion for the game has always been *infectious.

His passion for purchasing players less so, particularly in World Cup windows.

In the summers of Japan/South Korea 2002, Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010, the Gunners' manager spent a combined £27million, his biggest signing being Laurent Koscielny at £10m.

In those periods, Manchester City laid out £130m, Manchester United £70m, Liverpool £49m and Chelsea £36m.

Wenger, of course, is in prime position to scout the world’s finest talent although Jose Mourinho clearly didn’t feel the need to attend the jamboree.

At a cost of £62m, *Mourinho has signed Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa – two proven elite players at a prime age.

Brendan Rodgers did have plans to go out for the final week of the tournament but, regardless, he has already carried out significant business.

The Luis Suarez money is burning a hole in his pocket before it’s even in his pocket. Emre Can’s capture took Rodgers’ expenditure to £39m in this window.

Despite pressing World Cup matters, Louis van Gaal has been able to sanction £56m worth of recruitment.

Manuel Pellegrini has kept a low profile, but has still managed a cheeky £12m buy in the shape of Fernando.

Wenger? Nothing.

Strong links have been made.

Alexis Sanchez would be an exciting coup – as would his compatriot Arturo Vidal. But no concrete news yet.

Matthieu Debuchy is a very realistic target, but don’t bet against Wenger baulking at Newcastle’s asking price for the defender.

Wenger is not averse to leaving things late, but the situation will soon become urgent.

In Bacary Sagna, Wenger has lost his most reliable defender, a solid full-back who can provide central cover.

Thomas Vermaelen could also be on his way. To Manchester United, of all places.

Arsenal’s start to the season – which kicks off in just under six weeks’ time – is an onerous one with a two-legged *Champions League *qualifying tie alternating with the two opening games of the Premier League.

With a new contract signed and an FA Cup in the trophy room, Wenger seems relaxed but his squad still looks markedly *imbalanced – the need for an elite striker still obvious, *defensive cover clearly required and he could surely do with serious competition for Wojciech Szczesny.

Maybe he is confident of bringing in quality *reinforcements and he has always insisted that *business is more likely to take place after this World Cup.

But the stark fact is that Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and *Liverpool have already spent a combined £169m this summer.

Arsenal fans can only hope the manager pictured parading in his trunks on the Copacabana hasn’t been caught with his transfer pants down – again.

Campbell looks more of a wide player, still think Remy at £8m is a no brainer , he covers wide as well till Theo is ready.

Goalkeeper isn't urgent, these two plus hopefully Khedira and we're well set though.

very different option to Giroud (as opposed to someone like Mandzukic), cheap, used to the league (not a gamble) and covers the wide forward positions.
For that price it doesn't even matter if he doesn't play regularly, only thing would be QPR stuck him on a massive wage.
