View Full Version : People are apparently getting rid of Rolf Harris 'artworks' at knockdown prices. This seems

wrongheaded to me. Surely the notoriety should be increasing the value of his pisspoor daubs?

In a few years' time, the price will have rocketed imo. After all, Eric Gill used to f**k anything that moved, including his daughters and, on occasion, his Alsatian, but that doesn't stop people paying millions for his stuff or using Gill Sans, does it?

It was 25k so I may have another look now they are much cheaper.

his celebrity. So now that turns into notoriety the plebs don't want to know and the intelligentsia has always scoffed.

Had he been considered a good or great artist this would have no effect on his prices except perhaps increase them.

if indeed she really is an artist

This, coupled with Savile's 11 xmas dinners with Thatch at Chequers, demonstrates that even women in power love a wrong un.

Pretty much all modern artists have traded on their celebrity status to make and sell their art.

And, whilst he is an utterly undeniable genius, you could probably say the same about Carravaggio too.

The Savile/Thatcher thing is profoundly weird, actually. What in God's name did they talk about? Did he try to f**k her, do you think?

Banksy I can understand because at its most basic level it shows a talent for drawing.

Art hasn't existed for art's sake since the first cave painting, ffs! It's just a talent or a gimmick for sale to the highest bidder. So - like any other commodity - it has to be marketed and celebrity is an effective marketing tool.

Say what you like about Sir Jimmy, but you can't say he was overly fussy.

serious collectors didn't bother. The people who bought his paintings now don't want any associations with him and realise they've overpaid and therefore want to cut their losses. But there's no one to buy except speculators. Can't see many of them bothering either

If he were ever rehabilitated (which seems unlikely) or his merits as an artist reassessed they might rise again.

Important artists from the past may have done worse things than Harris (Sickert?) but it was in another country and beside the wenches are dead.

is through the medium of celebrity when in fact that are many many artists worldwide who are virtually "unknown" to the wider public who still fetch rather good prices

I think that's an understatement along the same lines as saying that Adolf Hitler was "a bit racist".

Here you go. Sample quote: "as Gill's history of adulteries, incest, and experimental connection with his dog became public knowledge in the late 1980s, the consequent reassessment of his life and art left his artistic reputation strengthened."

I think my ancient old red Honda civic estate blended in poorly, on reflection
