in my view, the price that the gay rights movement paid for mainstream acceptance (= roughly the right to marry) was giving up on sexual progressiveness. that's been really obvious here in the states -- the narrative that they had to deploy was "look, we're just the same as you heterosexual monogamous couples, it's just that both of us are the same sex."

that's a shame -- it seems obvious to me that our current obsession with monogamy isn't working or in the very least isn't working for everybody. for many people sex life is either nervous singledom or a relationship with eventual dissatisfaction, cheating, divorce -- rinse and repeat. i think it would have been great if the sexual freedom that the gay rights movement originally stood for had helped the culture at large face up to this problem. but it didn't -- if anything it's done the opposite: "gays are safe because they are monogamous nuclear family builders just like us!"

so i wholeheartedly support gay parades to the extent they stand for freedom from the one-size-fits-all monogamy model of modern western culture.
