Ears are alight

While killing time in Norwood Junction on Sunday afternoon (I know, I know) it seemed like a good idea for the missus and I to step into a pub for a quick drink. It was a nice day and they had a beer garden, so we went out back.
I tell you it was like something out of Dickens, but with shell suits and baseball caps.
Raucously cawing bunches of locals sat at various picnic tables shouting out at other groups at the top of their lungs - not the people they'd come or were sat with, seemingly just at random. Shrieks such as would normally stop traffic for fear of an accident having taken place were almost incessant and would I presume be a fearsome bother if you lived in the lower floors of the block of flats overlooking the place and wanted to sleep. Matchday pubs (well, Arsenal matchday pubs anyway) seemed like a quaint and civilised other world of genteel camaraderie. Which they haven't always done at the time.
We finished our drinks quickly and moved on.
I'm aware I'm starting to sound like Sir C describing the scene above, but if this is what the unfamiliar pub scene is like still within London, he would be well advised indeed to avoid trying it out in Swindon imo...
