Arteta and Gerrard are two examples of the former, but not the latter. Against weaker teams you can afford to have the luxury of someone like that strolling around in your own half with space to spray passes. When you come up against anyone decent it is a luxury you can never afford. You need a genuine ball-winner who will cover the ground, shield the defence and supply the skillful guys further forward. Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira are obvious top-drawer examples, but even someone like the little bald guy (Rios?) for Uruguay last night would have made a difference in the England team....

To do his running for him. Henderson was dreaful 1st half but got better. Still think we needed Jack or someone in the middle to actually try and keep the ball.

to compensate for Gerrard's lack of mobility, someone like Ramires or Khedira.
We don't have anyone.
