It used to be called Lower Road, at a time when Upper Street was Upper Road. The upper and lower supposedly refer to the route going either over (upper) or round the northern heights (ie Highgate). There is even a theory that these are the roads referred to in The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond song, although this theory may be relatively unknown outside of the website of St Mary's Church, Islington.
