more people would die if they increased motorway speeds to 80, she got rather flustered when I asked if there are any stats about how many fewer people would die if they reduced the current speed to 50 or 60. Presumably because this forced her to confront the fact that she and society as a whole are prepared to tolerate a certain amount of deaths for our own convenience, just not too many.

pedantic point: national speed limit is 70mph (although many motorways now employ a variable speed limit system)

You could prob find those stats in the States, they introduced a national limit of 55mph during the oil crisis of the 70s and (reportedly) because of the reduction in fatal accidents kept it thereafter.

get out of that place as soon as they can.

But that is the sort of attitude that got them their in the first place.

it's actually f**king dangerous, far easier to just boot down the outside at 85-90 and steer clear of all the lorries and timid, **** drivers

So surely safer to be in the fast lane?

Whereas actuslly they are arbitrary decisions.

The whole point of the one i was on was to demonstrate thst the very fact that you were speeding means that you were endangering the lives of yourself and others. This simply isnt true and they dont like it when you point it out.

whilst doing 1 mph faster than the vehicle they're trying to overtake :baghead:

if you hit them (whether hitting them was your fault or not) does it not make sense to promote slower driving?

Sir Charlie of Nicholas

i.e. driving competently.

Peter

Magic number thst keeps us all safe. Just as there are times when driving at or below the speed limit would be very dangerous there are also plenty of instances where going slightly above the limit is perfectly safe. A good driver knows the difference.

All i objected to was the moral argument that going above the speed limit makes me a bad person. It doesnt.

will not prevent you hitting them. But if you hit them at 30mph, they are 50% more likely to survive than if you hit them at 35mph (apparently).

limits they place on roads and then say it's due to accidents. The main road that leads to my road is wide and straight and is now a 30mph because a a schizophrenic decided at the last minute to swerve head on into a car coming in the opposite direction (at not much over 30 it was later shown) and killed 3 people

Monty91

so for that to be possible the rest of us have to sit through 4 hours of tedium then it seems a reasonable small price.

and are hardly even ever reported makes you so blase and flippant about the whole thing.

The equivalent of 4 commercial planes crashing and killing all onboard die on the roads every year.

Imagine if 4 planes crashed in the UK in one year?
