Imagine that tomorrow the whole Chelsea squad and manager was swapped with the whole Arsenal squad and manager.

Who would you support then?

For me this is a genuinely difficult question.

but as somebody who i was talking to yesterday pointed out -- this makes sports teams different from the vast majority of consumer goods and services that we consume.

imagine oreos and fig newtons (or insert any two biscuit brands) swapped packaging. pretty clear that the typical consumer would follow the product, not the brand.

interesting point that.

supporters are identifying themselves with the game, as a whole, rather than with an unbreakable allegiance to one club. Maybe even liking a particular player is enough to "support" whichever club he happens to play for at any given time.

My wife, for example, hates football yet apparently absolutely loves whichever team are due to batter The Arsenal that week http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/ohwell.gif
