Former Arsenal winger George Armstrong, of Great Abington, who died in 2000, will feature in new book
Written by CHRIS ELLIOT

Football legend George Armstrong is to feature in a new book packed with tributes from TV celebrities and star players – in honour of the grandchildren he never got to know.

The brilliant Arsenal winger, who lived at Great Abington, died suddenly in October 2000, aged 56, after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was a member of the famous Gunners side that won the League and FA Cup double in 1971, and when his playing career ended, he went on to become Arsenal’s reserve team coach.

His funeral at Cambridge’s Catholic Church in Hills Road almost brought the city to a standstill and was attended by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and many first team players, including Tony Adams and Dennis Bergkamp.

At the time, George’s daughter Jill Armstrong-Millson started a folder of tributes to her father, which she called a memory book, including recollections of him from players, managers and others who knew him well. Those memories are now being drawn together by

Arsenal fan Dave Seager, who has also carried out a series of interviews – and the plan is to bring out a book on October 31, the 14th anniversary of George’s death.
Among those involved in the book are Wenger, Bergkamp, Bob Wilson, Charlie George, Martin Keown and Lee Dixon. TV presenter Dermot Murnaghan and comedian Gary Wilmot, both Arsenal fans, also make contributions.

Jill and her brother Tom have five children between them, all of whom were born after George’s death – grandchildren he never got to cuddle. She has three children – Jude, 7, Mya, 5, and Karl, 3 –and Tom has two, George, 13, and Cody, 6.
Jill said: “The book is really for them, to tell them more about the grandfather they never knew. It’s wonderful so many people are helping, and there will be lots of pictures of dad in it.”
