View Full Version : Arsene hits out at the telly companies

Arsene Wenger has hit out at Sky for the way Arsenal’s game against Hull City was moved this weekend.
The fixture was originally scheduled for this Saturday, but after Chelsea’s progress in the Champions League, Sky shifted things around to provide Roman Abramovich’s club more time to prepare for their Gazprom sponsored semi-final against Atletico Madrid.
It means that thousands of Arsenal fans, who had booked train tickets, hotels and more, were inconvenienced with just eight days notice and Wenger says the Gunners have never been accommodated like that by the broadcasters.
“We never got any help on that front. Never,” he said. “There is no written rule. When you speak to the Premier League, it is not the Premier League. It is the television companies who help. It is not the Premier League.
“The television companies decide who plays when and some clubs have maybe better introductions with television companies. We never had and we never tried to influence the decision of Sky or any other company.
“If you want to know more, you look at the teams who have been protected since the start of the season and the teams who had the biggest rest between games. You will see and you come to your own conclusions.
“I don’t question the objectivity of the television companies but sometimes their choices don’t look very rational.
“I told you what I think about Chelsea – it is not my problem. If you want an objective view – just make your analysis between Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Man United and all the other teams who play in the Champions League and you will come to your own conclusions.”
The Arsenal fans who have been messed around have little or no comeback and although TV’s influence over the fixture schedules is all too obvious, there has to be some consideration for the people who are, as the mawkish television ads would tell you, the soul of the game.

How does moving our game help Chelsea with the extra day?

I dont think the outrage is so much about moving the game, it's that they've never done anything to help anybody else like that.

It's almost as if having a rich and powerful owner influences things sometimes.

When have they acted purely to help a side, regardless of how unfair the original stiatuon was?

I think it is mostly *******s really. Mourinho will insist chelsea always get stitched up.

The point is that tv companies decide when fixtures happen, not the premier league. Some people dont like that..... Still happily take the money though

would have added the caveat that that particular fixture (and any others that could be affected would be) being shown was subject to said team's potential involvement in Champions League semi-final. It has bugger all to do with Chelsea having a rich owner

When they announced the allocation on Monday I did a bit of research with Dublin based sports travel companies.

Only 1 came back, 679 for match ticket (Club Level?) and 3 star accommodation, travel not included. Further supplement for single room just in case you don’t want to share a room with a complete f**king stanger.

Robbing *******s, which was more or less the exact words I used in my reply.

Games are never moved to accomodate CL involvement though, are they?

Why now? Would they have done the same for us?

I also think he is referring to other instances which he explained before - having to play City in an early kick after Napoli springs to mind

as they scapped two late goals vs villa and could only draw first leg 2-2 at home to porto with only two days left

of course it worked out for them as they won league, liverrpool won nothing and they got to champions league final before facing barca masterclass.

I suppose the potentiall annoying bit is the wednesday night champions league followed by saturday morning league game. Our game at city being one.

Does the movement relate to days rather than hours, ie as long as there are two clear days between games you have to live with it?

I cant see it really makes much difference. Feels like a bit of an excuse.
