Personally, I feel the only criterion to apply to a joke in poor taste is whether it's any good.

That's the point, isn't it? That a good joke almost has to be offensive to someone? But it doesn't therefore follow that the more offensive a joke is, the funnier it is.

I can believe it. I understand he's a very thoughtful and intelligent man. I still suspect him of being fundamentally a nasty piece of work, though.
