Am I an awful human being, AWIMB? I was in the surgery at about 1900 yesterday evening and I went to

get a drink from the staff kitchen. There are always a team of 4 cleaners around at this time. They usually keep chit chat to themselves really.

Yesterday I held the door open for the only male cleaner.
As I did so, I said to him 'late one for you tonight?' quite slowly and he looked at me in puzzled fashion. I repeated it again 'will you all be working late tonight?' very slowly. He replied in a cockney accent and said 'yeah I understood the first time mate' before walking off with his bucket on wheels and didn't actually answer my question :-(

I shouldn't have assumed that he wouldn't be English, just because of his job. It was incredibly embarrassing and now I'm worried about how awkward it will be if and when I see him tonight.
