View Full Version : Fash, as much as I love watching ice hockey, and admire their fantastic skills

Things have gone a bit too far in that sport, imo. Not necessarily the fighting, coz the fighting is usually harmless, they don't get much punch behind their knuckles when standing on skates, and they always stop when one's down on the ice. No sir, it is more the blows the players get to their heads during the game which are a cause of major concern. Repeated concussions these players get, ending with severe head ijnuries in the long run. The sport is too tough. Same with NFL I've heard. Players comitting suicide.

Don't get me started on pro boxing. Ridiculuous that they allow this sport.

too many concussions. The style of the game has changed too. It's dump and chase.

At least they have changed the old Icing rule. This was one of the most dangerous situations before. Now they blow up the whistle on icing without the player having to touch the puck (different from the european rule) When you had to touch the puck it lead to very dangerous situation of 2 players chasing the puck like mad and end up crashing into the boards.

The equipment however is very good these days. For the amount of time I played. I am surprised I didn't get any more injuries.

The only thing damaging my teeth and my gums. Part of my gum is not even there any more :-( I don't have any scars though. Though my hip clicks I don't know if that's to do with playing or not.

The alphabet soup of WBC, WBA, IBS, etc has ruined it.

The whole 'chaps punching in each other in the head' thing is excellent, though. Can't fault it.

field hockey on ice.

It is a contact sport, just like football, but you must go for the ball, not like in ice hockey where you don't give an f about the puck as long as you can stop the man. If you get the ball first in bandy, you can tackle the man, just like in football.

The boards are low, just about 15 cm high, and will only stop balls played along the ice. They're also loose and will move if you fall into them.

It's quite silly.

Losing 20 pounds in a day then having to go on IV to recover just to make weight.

I understand it's to get a weight advantage. but weigh them say a week before the fight to avoid this sillyness.

Great physique, balance, coordination. But covering one's hands with thick gloves so that one can hit harder without hurting one's hands results in worse head injuries. The headaches these guys experience after their career are horrendous. If they survive their career.

Pikey bare knuckle boxing is better.

You can't stop it. If people want to put themselves at risk to win, then let them get on with it and the devil take the hindmost.

time to get up. Only to be knocked out further. This is very dangerous. Like double brain damage.

The gloves have only ever been there to save the hands and ensure the fights last longer.

championship. Only with athletes and drug companies.

Think what advances motorsport has brought to automotive. The same could be true of athletics and drugs. Yes, a few people's heads might explode or whatever, but that's all entertainment imo.

Where do you think the insurance money comes from? You and me, mate.

Same with helmets and motorcycles. Cars and seat belts.

Maybe they could do what they do with smokers. Continue smoking and Your NeXT hospital bill comes out of your own pocket.

Should we ban those, too?

Comically undersized cars, missiles, banana skins, red turtle shells and all manner of carnage.

As it is it's basically skalextric for people who live in Monaco

No matter how one looks at it, the objective in boxing is to damage your opponents brain. Pretty unique in the sporting world imo. You could take it even further and offer people ridicules amounts of money to fight each other with knives. I'm sure there are lots of people in Baltimore who would go for it (I've watched the Wire).

every race. I had a senior representative of a Formula One team (who shall remain nameless) describe modern drivers as 'milksops' to me once.

Maybe the challenger could choose the weapons, like duelling.

Duelling, finally a sport the british could do well in. As long as they break the 'after you' habit

Basically, every time anybody is in hospital they should high five the people smoking on their way out.

Now this could of course in all fairness, also be applied with the salad dodgers and heart diseases.
