Tottenham Hotspur can still win the Premier League before Arsenal
Forget this season - it's a write-off. Next year, however, we can see Tottenham Hotspur turn things around and win the Premier League. It's not so much of an outlandish theory either. Perhaps most importantly; they will win it before North London rivals Arsenal will.
Firstly, though, what's gone wrong this year?
Not even fans who wear the rosiest of rose-tainted spectacles could claim that this season has been one of any success.
The whole year seems to have been one long drawn out Gareth Bale hangover. No hair of the dog tonics have been able to cure this headache of epic proportions.
When Spurs lost Bale for a world record fee to Real Madrid, the obvious answer was to spend; few at the time were criticising Daniel Levy for launching his £100 million spree of the transfer market in the summer.
That is often the case with a real hangover; we make decisions that we think will help but in reality it deepens the problem.
Much like a hangover, though, there will be a turning point. Tottenham's turning point can come next season.
As mentioned already, spending hasn't helped yet and there's no evidence to suggest that it will this summer. So hopefully there won't be a mass clear-out.
One thing that does look certain to change, though, is the manager. Louis van Gaal has been linked with Tim Sherwood's position. If the Dutchman is appointed he would become Spurs' third manager in a year following Andre Villas-Boas' sacking at the end of 2013.
Sherwood has proved to be a source of minor amusement to the neutrals for his colourful touchline antics and bemused expressions. However at this stage, there remain big question marks over his experience; big defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea little do little to help his cause.
AVB can be accused of the same crimes, so a van Gaal-type character could be a good appointment. The 62-year-old Hooland manager who has also had spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich could be a calming, Grandad-like influence.
That's where the changes should stop though.
You do not become a bad player overnight. Tottenham fans, and the players themselves, should remember that.
With such drastic upheaval, it should have been foreseen that results would not have been instant and many thought the north Londoners could challenge for the title.
Next season can be different though. Spurs' record signings Roberto Soldado and Erik Lamela have provided the most disappointment, but they should be given another chance next season.
We hear the word a lot; but 'gelling' can be important. With a full, calm and uninterrupted pre-season, the boss - whoever it may be - can really stamp some authority and cohesion to this team.
Soldado, Lamela, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Sandro, Moussa Dembele, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris - to name a few - are fantastically skilled individuals. Next year, if they can be turned into a better team, they will challenge for the title.
Aside from the odd standout performers at Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea; Spurs' squad is no-less skilled.
Arsenal may always be the ones who are closer to the title but they never seem to get to that next level and Spurs can pip them to the post.
The only differance is that those sides didn't have as drastic changes as what we saw at White Hart Lane.
This current crop of flops can be turned into champions. They are more than capable of winning next year's Premier League title.
