She must get an international clearance first

A 14-year-old girl has been banned from playing for a football team in Yorkshire, and it has to be one of the more ridiculous situations in grass-roots sport.

Jobsworth officials often spoil everyone's fun when it comes to participation in activities that should be free for everyone, but this really does take that to a new level.

Carmen Olmos has been told that she strictly cannot take to the field at all for her community club, Wortley FC, for one reason. That is? She is Spanish.

As absurd as it is, the Football Association have ruled that the teen is ineligible to represent her local team because she cannot be granted 'international clearance'.

Dave Needham, head of sport at Fulneck School in Pudsey, Leeds, has revealed the poor girl's frustration and disillusionment at the decision, saying she is "desperate" just to play.

"She is a fantastic footballer," he said. "She attended a number of trials with Wortley Girls FC and enjoyed them so much that she asked to join.

"The club wrote to the FA to check, because Carmen had not previously registered for either a Spanish or English club.

"Sadly, the reply was that she could only play for the school," he added.

"Carmen is unhappy, her family are unhappy, we are unhappy and Wortley FC are livid."

Carmen herself said she was "gutted" she could not play.

"I really enjoyed the training, and the girls at the club were really helpful," she said.

Robert Greaves, secretary of the club’s women’s teams, said he thought it was a ridiculous situation for the young girl.

"It seems to be a rule designed for professional clubs and it’s the same rule for everyone – which is not appropriate," he said.

"This is a 14-year-old girl who is at a school in Leeds and wants to play football."

FIFA, who the FA are effectively blaming for the situation, have international regulations in place that are preventing Carmen from playing the sport she loves.

"The same rules apply to the registration of foreign minor players who have never been previously registered," a FIFA spokesman explained.

So, for fans of absurd rules being upheld, this is positive news. But for those who would love to see the likes of Carmen allowed to play with her friends and be included in community sport, it's a desperately depressing situation.

Grass-roots sport, eh? Things are never quite as one would hope.

Also worth mentioning that it's the clubs, and us quite prominent among them who have created this situation.

After all, the rules are there to stop teams - and crucially unscrupulous agents - trafficking youngsters in bulk. "Yes but it's not the professional game" you say, well no under 17 football is professional.

So what might sound like "red tape" and "bureaucratic madness" actually turns out to be a well thought through, if not exceptionally well executed attempt, measure to actually protect people.

17 year old exchange student from Norway was banned from playing football. Canadian kid with UK parents moved to his relatives in the UK, banned from football.

The Norwegian FA said "enough is enough" a few years ago. They bypass FIFA and give dispensations according to common sense. Like we did in our club when a 13 year old orphaned refugee from Burkina Faso wanted to play football with us.

FIFA have now for years turned a blind eye to the big clubs insane trafficking operations with children from the third world, and happily banned these well off western kids as an alibi that they do protect kids. Which they don't.

That said, it's a small price to pay to begin stopping the ****ty things that go on with kids who want to be the next Yaya Toure and end up homeless on the streets of a nondescript mitteleuropean town.

The point is, they arent stopping her playing, just playing competitively. Obviously this terrible injustice should not be inflicted on us wealthy europeans just because some junior hottentot has to sleep rough for a bit.

FIFA did the opposite. They banned exchange students from playing, but allowed European clubs to establish "academies" and fill them up with talented children.

help a third world kid? My colleague has a talented son, ten years old. He's had trials with Porto ffs! Can't you see the hypocracy? Ban a girl who loves to play football but allow the big clubs to continue to recruit small children. Until now.

I know the situation is absurd, I admitted that in my first post, but griping about a minor inconvenience which is what not being able to play competitive sport is, is a bit much when thousands of minors are being shipped around like veal calves and having their lives ruined for the sake of the game.

but FIFA - until now, have not followed up their own bloody rule! They have allowed clubs in Spain, Portugal, Belgium Germany etc to do exactly what you say, purchase 100 kids from South America for 200 quid each in order to try and produce one Messi. Get these kids to great academies, pay their parents, and then when they don't make it, they're sent home again or end up as you say on the streets of Dortmund. Sport Executive, a magazine in Denmark have now sent endless requests to FIFA why they allow this to happen. There are ****loads of these kids around clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid. Tey always replied that nothing was wrong in Barcelona. Until now.

But a 16 year olf exchange student, from the US, Norway of wherever, where immediately banned, because they did not have the money to bribe FIFA or lawyers to threaten FIFA. They were ideal alibis. Ffs, J, refugees where banned from playing football and getting included into the society sothat FIFA could look good.

Classic Jorge

..for breaking those rules.

Those clubs have a duty of care and that duty binds them to look after the kids in the academies to an internationally established standard. That's progress, and if some - and for some read very few - kids are stopped from playing competitively then surely that's a price worth paying.
