Or even worse, dramatised. Is there a bigger kick in our collective nuts as producers of history programming who dont believe we can extrapolate a situation enough to imagine it happening, or for that matter that our attentions cant take something being in the abstract?

The Plantagenets in particular were fascinating because they started out French and oversaw the creation of a truly English national identity. Their era also took in the establishment of common law still followed in the UK and US to this day; Magna Carta; near-constant inernecine strife; women murdering and usurping kings; umpteen wars with the french, scotch and welch; at least one gay king who ended up with poker up his bum; the Black Death; the Peasants' Revolt; Crusades; and - as if all that weren't enough - The Wars of the Roses, which is sufficiently horrific, gory and complicated to make Game of Thrones look like an Enid Blyton novel.

If that lot leaves you cold, you don't deserve history.
