Mind you, I'm guessing neither Bond St nor The Savoy are their natural hunting grounds.

I'm afraid I got very, very drunk :-(

Although I did get pissed enough on Saturday that I was able to be persuaded to gatecrash a wedding. http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/ohwell.gif

I made an appalling error and mixed my drinks. Mixed them badly. :-(

Those horrid Vieux Carré doodads, was it?

After a few of those, I decided to go for the low alcohol option and moved onto champagne. However, I became intrigued by a conversation with the barman about variations on the Negroni - bourbon instead of gin, cognac instead of gin, and so on, so tried a few of those.

Then we went for dinner and drank red wine :-(

I suspect it's because I over-tip :-(

Any good?

Then forgot to order a burger.

The Savoy Grill's ok - but not much more than that. The steaks aren't Hawksmoor / Goodman quality, but the surroundings and service are nice.

I like it on hot summer days. It's deliciously cool and dark and the beads of condensation on the side of your first gin and tonic sparkle like jewels.

Not been to either of the steak places yet, keep thinking about going to Goodman at Canary Wharf but haven't got round to it.

years. It's a peculiarly inoffensive type of 'celebrity' place in that respect. I've only ever seen that level of 'famous' person in there.

Eventually, though, you start to think you recognise everyone.

Tour and then a rather poor meal at the Skylon.

I was sorry to think they were losing their way because I used to love the Orrery.

You don't have that problem in The Wolseley, for example. One lunchtime we noted Twiggy, Michael & Mary Parkinson and Dawn French

went with Coq because the starters really appealed to the better half, she had a really good Lobster starter with bisque. I went for something I would never normally order, scallops with bacon in fried bread with braised peas and baby gem, and was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

Her main of cod with shelfish, olive oil mash and crab jus was very good and the rump with salsify, mushrooms and red wine sauce I had was cooked perfectly medium rare. The gratin dauphinois was one of the better ones I've had in a restaurant as well.

The staff were really good as well, attentive without being overbearing.

The funny thing that day was how Mary Parkinson processed through the room in an absolutely regal fashion. No one bothers a celeb in there but everyone wanted a word or a touch from the saintly Mary and everyone received a benevolent wave or even a word or two. Quite why she deserves such reverential treatment I really don't know.

on Lombard St, seems very popular with Spanish ex-pats as it was full of them.

Along the lines of D&D places that surprise on the upside. It is fantastic. And it has a nice rooftop terrace, a discreet (and discrete) cocktail bar. Where you can roll your drinks onto the bill and thereby avoid over tipping...

The place is run by people from Gijon, which always assures good treatment since the missus is from there too.

Aside from the obvious stars, i mean. They're not underrated. I mean Spanish food in general. Stands up there with French and Italian.
