View Full Version : It'll be a sad day when he goes. I know things move on but it's hard to imagine Arsenal FC without

Amazing how many "incomplete passes" he has there.

well over £100k a week on a 3 year deal with a massive signing on fee because there was no transfer fee?

Obviously we are not going to do that.

Instead, we'll go out and get someone good in his place. Coleman will do.

The only thing that cannot happen is Jenkinson being promoted.

What he is reported to want (120k p/w?) would cost nearly 19 million over three years. What would it cost, in terms of transfer fee and salary, to get someone else on similar level? And would they have value beyond that three years?

I think he's asking for a little bit more than the club should pay. If he can get that elsewhere then fair enough, but there's a possible inflationary aspect here that could easily see everyone decent in the squard expecting £120k p/w. I'm not one of those that sees no upper limit on what footballers should expect to be paid.

would cost £23million (plus signing on fee) and he'll be **** in 2 years and we still won't have a replacement.

Sign Coleman for a similar fee and we have a new right back for 7 years or so.

Though the reality is that he is little different from van Persie who became a hated figure on the basis of folk deciding he wanted to leave solely for more money.

Van Persie was accused of greed, a lot of fans would not for a second entertain the thought of there being any actual football motive to the move.

Sagna is leaving also on a factor of earnings though of course slightly different in this probably being his last ever contract.

Unless of course he signed a 1 year deal with us and then had it extended next summer on the basis of form.

during his eight-or-so years with the club and people feel that he delivered his best fairly consistently, allowing for a couple of injuries and the odd blip. With Robin the perception was that after about six years largely on the table, he hit his straps for 18 months and then immediately departed for better things. Rightly or wrongly, people felt that he owed us a little more than he gave us, whereas they think that we've got very good value from Sagna.

You will probably disagree, and the details of the above can be quibbled with (and definitely will if LA sees this post) but I think that in the broad strokes of perception, this is a factor.

common-or-garden greed, and joining Manchester United for more money. That's in a different league.

Notice that nobody seems to mind that RvP joining somebody else may have resulted in the club receiving a smaller fee.

Or indeed any club.

We enter into a fixed term contract of employment with them, no player chooses to be injured.

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the figures but Wikipedia suggests we got 277 games from van Persie over 8 seasons and 272 from Sagna over 7.

The difference on an average basis is less than a Carling Cup run yet one is a loyal servant and the other a money grabbing Dutch rapist or other abusive term depending on your viewpoint.

A person with a penchant for statistical analysis (LA) would point out that a lot of the Dutch's early "appearances" were 10 minutes at the end of the game as let's remember he joined us when we were very good and he was vying for a place with former greats like Henry, Bergkamp and then the likes of Adebayor.

Bacary was probably in for 90 from day 1.

I suppose the key point is the difference in emptional response. Some would suggest thst your cold, hard, matter of fact approach to this runs cpunter to the more emotional response of the average football fan.

Pretty boring hobby if it is just about fixed term contracts of employment. Stadia would be full of HR professionals

Some players do.

I don't expect all to, so when a player chooses to leave and take his employment elsewhere I don't think any less of him.

I did not think less of Sol Campbell for example when he walked out on his then employer and down the road to their nearest and dearest rival.

Or greedy c**t if you prefer?

Just give it a go :-)
