View Full Version : Couple of things: what the hell does cisgender mean? What is a transman? And wouldn't it just have

been easier to write an article answering these perfectly reasonable questions honestly rather than moaning that people are understandably curious? After all, what are you ashamed of?

To avoid any grey areas, it's not because I would but I have to say I probably would.

Not that I'm into the whole he/she thing, she's just a bit harder to tell than your everyday member of sweet looking melon farmer

i.e. someone who was born with female physical attributes, but who identifies themselves as a male.

A cis man is essentially a man born with the correct physical body.

I am a cis man.

'transgender'. You're just messing about, frankly. Sh*t or get off the pot.

Honestly, it's a minefield with these loons.

But yeah, any NORMAL person will recognise that the article is a heap of hysterical *******s.

However, I think they've finally rumbled me, since my occasional comments - however innocuous and right on - now seem to get deleted on sight. :-(

'Sex' is - other than in a very few cases - not a matter for debate. Gender, on the other hand, people seem to think they can make up as they go along.

This is what bothers me. I have no issue with people's sex lives, view of their bodies or what they want to do with them, but don't tell me that black is white and ask me to go along with it. I don't.

..that gender is, or rather ought to have, fixed characteristics. It is however socially constructed, hence the existence of the 'gender studies' literature from which the terms in your original post derive.

Or did I get you wrong?

Ashberto

Or just a student thereof?

Ms Ashberto has a masters degree in gender studies. She mostly thought it was a load of pompous old middle-class tosh, taught by people who refused to accept any debate or discussion, ostracising anyone stepping outside the 'paradigm' of their right-on belief-system.

...has more than a grain of substance to it. Contra Ms Ashberto, I think anything that threatens the cosy, narrow 'normal' world of sexual and gender 'tidiness' is often derided with that kind of anti-intellectual diatribe. People did the same once with those who suggested the earth was round!

Comment is free is enough to turn anybody into Chief. I never understood his 'liberals are fascists' shtick until I dared comment on there. They will delete almost anything that doesn't agree with the writer. In fact, someone there once told me that most of the men I know are rapists, but only I had my post deleted.

I say this because a focus on the patriarchal model of society was a key part of the ideology taught, masquerading as academic study. You hurl strawman insults like 'flat-earther', as well as 'anti-intellectual diatribe', and 'Daily Mail/Telegraph reader', but I suspect that what you consider to be intellect is not the ability to understand and think in an intelligent way, but the requirement to subscribe to a specific political position.

First, my original reference was to the nuance of gender and the ways it is constructed/deconstructed in the literature. I very much doubt that an MA course 'taught' a specific ideology, although an appreciation of intersectionality would have been, I suspect, a key component of the course. If one really objects to that type of enquiry, one wonders what she was doing on a gender studies course in the first place.

Second, my reference to the Mail and the Telegraph reflects, the not very contentious argument, that those publications would indeed be hostile to intellectual interrogation of such subjects.

Third, I don't require anybody to subscribe to my, or any other political position, but I would suggest that "middle class tosh" in reference to a well established field of academic study you (and your partner) dislike, does constitute an anti intellectual diatribe.

Finally, your last sentence, I would suggest, is best directed at yourself rather than me.
