If moving abroad whats the best way to move wons funds. Just to a bank transfer to the new account?

Assuming you are going from Sterling to CAD.

Look at HiFX. Basically you tell them how much you want to move and they lock you in at a rate at that time. You then transfer them the Sterling and when they receive that, they transfer the CAD to your Canadian account.

If you just transfer straight from your sterling account to your CAD account, you will be at the mercy of the banks FX rate and they will rip your face off.

If I am transferring a large amount say 10grand can I send them a bank transfer or does it have to be by card?

My bank go mental if I spend about a grand start getting calls from the security nazis.

Also if it is a large amount, speak to them for a slightly better rate than you get on the internet.

But the downfall it is deposit only account until I am in canada and verify I am moving there.

Unlike with others, reducing the hassle no end. But, as others said, use a niche forex shop to change your loot, as the bank, even if it's the same one, will ass rape you on the currency exchange and transfer. Remember though, don't get stopped in customs with >$10k cash on you, as they'll tax it and ask questions about use of funds. I'm sure you have nothing to hide, but the inconvenience factor alone would be the motivation.
