Employment rights is an overly politicised and tricky area to debate, and Bob Crow did his bit to bring the relevant issues to the fore. He always seemed to do his best to advocate the interests of those he was charged with representing. Whatever you think of his beliefs, or indeed the man himself, that was his job and he did it well.

These days, far too many leading figures on the political spectrum don't seem to believe in anything. I think it would be disingenuous for anyone to say that Bob Crow was guilty of the same.

Fair play Brother Bob, you played your part. Goodnight sweet prince.

I would argue that unions are obsolete. All the protections employees need (and more) are now enshrined in law. Unions now exist solely to bully and coerce employers into paying far more than the market rate for labour. They are dinosaurs.

The unions have their issues. They're overly bureaucratic. They're determinedly dogmatic. A lot of them don't know how to pick their battles. And yes, arguably they have less of a role to play in the actual forming of new employment policies or legislation than they once did.

But beyond that, collective bargaining remains one of their core functions. The expertise and support that many unions give to their members ensures that unionised employees, who otherwise would have little or no bargaining power, can have a say in negotiating their benefits with their employers. Market forces aren't infallible, and collective bargaining does its bit to address some of the injustices and imbalances. Look at the RMT - its members are working class people who have well paid jobs. That's good for them as individuals, it's good for the economy and it's good for social mobility, which ultimately is good for societal progress.

That means the market for those jobs is protected, immobile and monolithic, allowing little new blood in and protecting the incompetent, particularly as it is prohibitively expensive for the employer to create new positions.

At the same time, those prohibitive employee costs are passed on to the London consumer, thus restricting their spending power. Also, unions are by their nature resistant to technological innovation and improvements in efficiency as they fear it means fewer jobs. Thus, the RMT blocks driverless trains, automated ticketing and half a hundred other things that would make the consumer's experience better and more efficient. So we end up with tube strikes, delays and other inefficiencies that cost London plc a huge amount of money every day. Unions are a dirty great obstacle in the path of progress.
