trophy last year, Man City and Chelsea have not won a trophy for years. (Though the Chavs won a few in the late '90s.)

But neither team has actually won a trophy in the last decade.

They've just bought some.

It's hardly the same and they know it.

I had very few football fans in my social circle (less than 10) and when I saw one of my best mates (a Chelsea fan) after they'd bought their first league title under Jose (I hadn't seen him for a year or more) he was delighted.

He was so happy, telling me how great it felt.

I said "You haven't won the league. You just bought it. The first time I saw my team win the league was Anfield '89. If you'd given my missus the 2003 Chelsea team, 2 seasons and £350m, she'd have won the league."

His face dropped cos he knew it was true. "Yeah, I know. Ok, I'd have rather we'd done it differently, but I've been waiting my whole life for this."

But his enjoyment was slashed by my words of truth.
