The left and the criminal classes always hate them, of course, but the general public have massively lost faith in them following their incompetence and general spinelessness during the riots a couple of years back, while things like the Lawrence business are continuing to do them enormous damage.

That could all be managed, but the Plebgate business has turned their traditional supporters the Tory party and the right against them pretty completely. You're now seeing articles in The Telegraph and the Mail attacking the police savagely.

My prediction is that, whoever wins the next election, you're going to see a cross-party consensus on reforming the Police Service root and branch. Could be fun. :-)

The first step in the reform would be to start making the police accountable. Also, in a more general sense and on the journey towards accountability, we need to do something about judge led inquires. No more can they be the soft option Hutton, Leveson and every other one in living memory has.

Independent appointments, real sanctions and terms of reference set properly, not with the end goal in mind.
