£250 won't get you a brilliant one. So if you get it and get into using it, you will soon become frustrated by the limitations and want to upgrade and be spending twice.

But if you are just gonna be happy having a bigger camera than one you stick in your pocket, leave it pretty much on auto and be happy with better pics than you get from your pocket camera, then go for something like this...

Berni is right that the lens is king here. But don't worry about that if you are gonna be content to not make this an expensive hobby.

Certainly the people I have to deal with at work with smoking related disease appear to be largely working class people. I suspect the demographic has changed significantly in the last 20 years or so.

As you can see you can get them 2nd hand on Amazon, good condition for £250, as new £300+.

Let you have it for £180, cos I'm raising money for a wide for my wife's new film (video camera) and that's what I was offered by some internet site.

Could get more if I took the time on ebay etc, but we don't have time for that ****.

As some replies to your post say, it's all about the glass and this is a great lens. (That's why I'm flogging it along with the sound recorder and an old MBP to raise the money for an £800 wide angle that may be used twice, if at all, in her next film.)
