View Full Version : Does Sol Campbell have a point?

I mean, he did leave a match at half time such was his unswerving commitment to the cause, but you have to admit he was always a little too far from the captaincy than perhaps he shouldve been.

It did seem to always be white, perhaps even beige, chaps who were picked for the captaincy. You know the sort, sensible haircuts, like a bit of golf and cricket, the type that would get into the golf club without even the faintest hint of a black ball.

Whilst the 'should've been england captain for ten years' is taking it a bit far you have to at least agree with him a bit, dont you?

One of the first names down on the teamsheet, as the clíche goes.

Can't see that changing in a matter of months.

Even Triesman admitted he was right (whilst bizarrely claiming the FA wasn't consciously racist).

Trouble with the England gig is, the captaincy is basically a marketing tool. An (to quote Withnail) 'enormous spade' is simply bad for business as far as sponsors are concerned.

And, of course, a significant proportion of the sort of people who buy England shirts are keen racists.

Firstly, I said more then rg below and secondly your question was nothing if not obtuse.

I seem to remember him wearing the armband for us on more than one occasion, whether that was from the start or due to substitutions I dont know.

My question was perhaps badly worded but i thought it was obvious in that I was asking had he even been our captain.

Of course I knew he had been Spurs captain.

Everything about it is 20 years behind the rest of football (which isn't exactly progressive at the best of times) and the sort of people who crawl out of the woodwork whenever England are involved in a football tournament make me want to vomit.

The only thing that surprises me is that there's even a debate. Big, strong centre half gets 70-odd caps for England - it would be unthinkable for such a figure not to get the captaincy if they were white.

I would have thought that was a huge part of the equation here.

If he was denied the role because there was other, justifiable alternatives then tough ****.

tbh I think he should've held off with the 'captain for a decade' bit, just to make him seem less mad

choice for captain of an international sporting team.

Spurs, fine. England? No. Makes no sense.

Not that Owen was anything other than a stop gap for a game every now and then so not really a viable argument there. Nor with Shearer who got the gig in 1996 when Campbell wasn't even in the side

I mean, I could just be having my judgement clouded by the fact they wear the same kit and are utter c**ts...

Of course, this overlooks the fact that the managers usually choose the captain rather than the FA.

The FGY was a bit mental and is mad for banging on about racism. He loves to bandy accusations of racism, loves it.

I'd like to know why Jewish players never get picked for England. Now there's racism.

I'm assuming he was Jewish, tbh. Bit odd to go around being called Cohen and not be a Jewish, you'd have thought.
