I doubt it, I suspect they are just happy if we finish in the top 4. Doing what it takes to get us to the level of trophy winners doesn't interest them. It would take too much effort and too much money.

beneath a man of Wenger's calibre. I suspect the ruse was not his idea so he should have used his considerable power at the club to veto it.

Wasn't it a clause that the agent said was in place and Liverpool denied was in place which is why they said no?

Didn't Liverpool then offer him more money, remind him he owes the club and fans some loyalty after they supported him, then renew his contract WITH a hefty buy out clause ? Which he accepted.

What do you expect the club to do then or are you just pissed at the amount offered? Or just generally pissed with Wenger?

offered them £45m or £50m ... or what Arsenal did?

Personally I would have met their target Arsenal did, I really don't see that as a problem at all.

The problem was the agent who got his facts wrong

Arsenal were also wrong in that they didn't demand a copy of the contract

It would be madness!

offering over £40m to speak with the player. The £40,000,001 made us look stupid and put us on the back foot. £41m may have been slightly better received and would not have exposed us to ridicule. It would still have been rejected as there clearly was no release clause. And you cannot demand to see a copy of a contract between two other parties, it is none of your business. But a follow-up offer of a worthwhile amount may just have tipped the balance at that time. It is not about finances per se, we had the money, but about achieving the desired outcome.

stupid, that isn't how to do business.

If you were buying a car through ebay and there was a limit of £10k would you have offered £11k?

would be perceived, £1m over more professional, and once the agent's mistake had been exposed why would you not offer more to get what you want? (up to a pre-agreed maximum). And yes, I might offer £11k for the car if it was something that i really really wanted (and could afford) to wipe out the opposition. At the end of the day I would have the car! My focus would be on closing the deal. Paying less than my maximum would be a bonus.
