Succession talk seems to have tailed off though, there were all sorts of rumours about Dragan Stoijkovic a while back but nothing for a long time now.

that Man Utd changed their manager in stable circumstances, after walking the league, gave him 30m plus a 15m youngster (Zaha), then another 30m+ to spend on Chelsea's best player, appointed an extremely experienced PL manager, and the result has been a rapid decline in results, disharmony in the team etc

Yet some are absolutely desperate for us to do the same

Monty91

substantial risk that we experience several years of stagnation once he leaves.

Anti-intellectuals like steve williams will snigger, but the biggest risk is probably a kind of identity crisis enveloping the club.

Or increase in debt.

I don't see that they have much choice but to spend and 3-4-5 or whatever players they need won't come cheap.

Presumably they have a plan post-Wenger which they see as viable and will simply see it through.

Not sure how Moyes would impact on this at all.

The encouraging part is that Wenger isnt sralxfrgsn so wont deliberately appoint his own, hugely inferior, successor with the express purpose of making him look better.

Although Arsene will probably hang around like Banquo's ghost

approach and go for someone who has had success previously. That's not to say you can't get a very good manager appointing someone like Rodgers, but i think it's a safer bet if you went for one of the big names.

A similar situation to signing players, sort of.

Chelsea appointed Benitez and trousered a cup, they appointed DiMatteo and did what we have never done.

'Yet some are absolutely desperate for us to do the same'

therefore is clearly bollox when there are other options available.

To postulate that the Wenger Out brigade are desperate to follow Utds example as if that is the only way is the vapid mutterings of a flaccid **** eater.
All the Wenger out brigade want is
Ambition to win something
Spend the money on winning something instead of Diaby's medical expenses
and Win something.

Fortunately it would seem that Wenger has been persuaded to do some of the above and may actually achieve it, which is nice for everybody.

The WO's get the success they desperately want for the club
and the AKBs get more Wenger.

how far down the rabbit hole do we go?

If he was an unknown and free is it really likely he'd be as good as he is? prob not.

If I'm doing a direct comparison but only changing the fee paid and player profile Id be pretending he would still have had the direct impact he did have but not created the buzz around the team he did.
Prob a drop off of 6ish points.
I'd still be thinking hes good

but that is essentially worthless, and most of the managers to have won it in the last few years have been sacked soon after.

We don't really know whether the club had much spare money or not. What we do know is that it never had the limitless funds of most of our rivals to keep on buying players, and then buying more players if the first lot didn't work.

Even being consistently top 4 in this time is good, which is why AW's supporters, er, support him.

Until the Wenger Out faction can show some understanding of this without just shouting "No trophies!" I can't really credit them with being reasonable about the discussion.

So Arsene doesn't always know best, and he's not perfect, but very few people (only two or three on here, for example) really think that.

I wouldn't mind knowing what haul of Silverwear our friend RC here would have deemed sufficient not to have sacked the manager.

our fans are crying out for. Either spending more money than they have, appointing numerous managers, sticking with the same manager, appointing young English managers, experienced PL managers, succesful foreign managers...not one strategy has worked, aside from spending 500m+, has it?

R.C. Celebrating the return of Trophies

All Ive ever been after is a commitment to try and win something.
To hear AW talk of the FA cup, (A trophy I still consider worthy of winning) as a bauble, to not even try and win the league just cos some big boys are playing and he thinks we can't compete (even tho we did exactly that in the late 90s)cos we're having the decorators in really f**ked me off.
To talk of fourth place as a trophy is frankly sackable in itself
and that total lack of ambition for footballing success fed itself down to the playing staff. We then went season after season after season with our best players leaving to pursue dreams of wealth and trophies elsewhere.
Last year we sold the title to those c**ts oop north when a mere bridging loan for a year and a modicom of ambition would have easily kept RvP with us.

For the last 6 or so years we entered 4 competitions with no real ambition to compete in any of them and that aint the Arsenal I grew up supporting. That was my beef with the Gallosocialistsurrendermonkey, that and 3 years of Almunia
