They would be happy with those subscriber numbers by the way. The targeted ads they can now sell to logged in subscribed users, by tracking their behavioural and demographic data are worth far more than the low revenue untargeted ads they sold before the paywall was up.
NB, the figures are a bit misleading as well, because they give free online access to print subscribers, so they aren't all new subscribers
though, it's not that great

at least they are advertising the content with a metered paywall.
It's quite amusing just how sharply the times and sun have fallen out of the zeitgeist and been replaced by Huffington Post / Buzzfeed type sites
