following the letter of the law. Notions of common sense, assuming fair play, giving players the benefit of the doubt or letting things go are all ludicrous. The referees are they to call what they see and not what they might surmise depending on how charitable they feel...
The penalty given was questionable, Webb then ignores another clear penalty 10 yards from view after Ox's lunge. Presumably he did this out of fair play to even things up.
He then ignores various clear chances to give Gerrard a red and even a second red card (!), giving him the benefit of the doubt as England captain and therefore a man of unquestionable integrity and honesty...
Everything that supposedly makes Webb a good ref in most experts' eyes are actually the attributes that make him a poor one.
